Thailand Introduces Expanded MRT Fare Subsidies

Post by : Shakul

The Thai government has unveiled a significant enhancement to its cost-of-living support by adding four MRT rail lines to the Thai Helps Thai Plus 60/40 initiative. This program is focused on alleviating transportation costs for commuters and promoting the use of public transport within the capital.

As stated by the Prime Minister’s Office, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority, along with operators of the Blue, Purple, Yellow, and Pink Lines, has officially become part of this initiative. This action reflects the government's broader approach to lessen financial burdens on households while supporting affordable transportation.

Eligible riders can access fare subsidies via the Paotang mobile app starting from June 1 until September 30, 2026. The government will subsidize 60% of MRT travel costs, leaving commuters responsible for the remaining 40%.

Authorities have set a cap on the subsidy at 200 baht per person per day and a total limit of 1,000 baht monthly. Officials anticipate that this initiative will offer significant savings for those who regularly utilize rail services for work, education, or daily activities.

This program could enhance public transit usage, especially amid the ongoing challenges of rising living costs. By easing commuting expenses, the government aims to maintain consumer purchasing power and stimulate economic activity nationwide.

Additionally, officials noted the broader advantages of encouraging mass transit. A shift towards rail can alleviate road traffic, reduce fuel use, and improve urban air quality. This policy aligns with long-term goals to establish a more sustainable transportation framework.

Eligible commuters can acquire single-journey MRT tickets through the Paotang app and redeem them at ticket counters for all four lines. Service hours will be from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily, ensuring easy access for passengers throughout the subsidy duration.

Government officials indicated that further initiatives aimed at enhancing living conditions and public transport access may be forthcoming. The administration remains dedicated to supporting citizens in navigating economic obstacles while fostering safe, dependable, and cost-effective urban transit.
