Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has urged Malaysians to embrace the essential principles of Rukun Negara, reflecting on the message shared by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, during the birthday celebrations at Istana Negara.
Fahmi emphasized that the King's words are a crucial reminder of the need for national unity, mutual respect, and social harmony. He stressed the importance of remembering the lessons from the tragic racial riots of May 13, 1969, noting that these lessons should guide the nation toward peace and stability moving forward.
The minister pointed out that political leaders have a vital role in promoting Rukun Negara's values and should be careful to avoid words or actions that could divide the populace. He highlighted that maintaining unity requires ongoing effort from both leaders and citizens.
Following the federal awards and honours ceremony, Fahmi remarked on the relevance of the King's address, especially at a time when public debates can become polarized. He recognized that appreciation for diversity is one of Malaysia’s key strengths.
The minister asserted that understanding and implementing Rukun Negara principles should extend beyond mere symbolism. Instead, these values should be visible in everyday interactions, public behaviour, and national decision-making processes.
During the ceremony, Sultan Ibrahim reminded attendees that the essence of Rukun Negara should remain the cornerstone of the nation. His Majesty also cautioned political figures to discuss sensitive subjects carefully, particularly during election periods when emotions are intensified.
This royal message underscored the necessity for responsible leadership and positive dialogue to ensure Malaysia's continued peace, prosperity, and social cohesion. The significant occasion was attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, other senior government officials, and recipients of awards, reinforcing the importance of the King's message.
