Fairchild Grand Slam Leads Taiwan to 14-0 Win Over Czechs

Fairchild Grand Slam Leads Taiwan to 14-0 Win Over Czechs

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Taiwan secured a dominant 14-0 victory over the Czech Republic on Saturday in the World Baseball Classic, powered by a second-inning grand slam from Stuart Fairchild.

The game ended early under the tournament’s mercy rule after Taiwan built a lead of 10 or more runs following seven innings. The win marked Taiwan’s first victory in the tournament after suffering a heavy 13-0 loss to Japan a day earlier, a game highlighted by Shohei Ohtani’s grand slam.

Taiwan started strongly in the first inning, using aggressive small-ball tactics to take a 2-0 lead. The team capitalized on two bunt singles, a double steal, and a throwing error by Czech catcher Martin Cervenka to score its first runs of the tournament.

The turning point came in the second inning. With two outs, Czech pitcher Jan Novak allowed a single and issued two walks, loading the bases. Stuart Fairchild then delivered a powerful grand slam to left field, significantly extending Taiwan’s lead.

Taiwan continued to build momentum throughout the game. The team added two runs in the fourth inning, one more in the fifth, and five runs in the sixth inning to seal the commanding win. Taiwan also set a World Baseball Classic tournament record with seven stolen bases during the match.

Pitcher Chen Zhong-Ao Zhuang earned the win for Taiwan, while Jan Novak was charged with the loss for the Czech Republic.

Fairchild, who plays in the Cleveland Guardians organization, qualified to represent Taiwan through his Taiwanese mother.

In other Pool C action, Australia improved to 2-0 and currently leads the group. Meanwhile, pool favorites Japan (1-0) were scheduled to face South Korea (1-0) later on Saturday. The Czech Republic remains winless after losing all three of its games so far in the tournament.
