Tragic Death of Singapore Tourist on Bhutan Trek

Tragic Death of Singapore Tourist on Bhutan Trek

Post by : Shakul

In a heartbreaking incident, a Singaporean tourist lost her life while descending from Bhutan’s renowned Tiger’s Nest Monastery, a majestic site revered for its spiritual significance. The event unfolded during a guided tour, leaving travelers and tourism officials in shock.

The 40-year-old victim was with a 16-member group on a Bhutan Smart Saver itinerary arranged by a Singaporean travel agency. They had arrived in Bhutan after their departure from Singapore on May 26 and were exploring the picturesque Himalayan location.

As reported by tour representatives, the woman began to feel unwell during the hike. Despite her discomfort prior to reaching the monastery, she pressed on and successfully arrived at the sacred location, which stands over 3,000 meters above sea level.

However, her condition deteriorated during the descent, prompting her to notify the guide. Emergency assistance was provided on-site, where cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered. A fellow traveler, who happened to be a doctor, assisted in efforts to stabilize her until urgent medical transport was arranged.

She was quickly transported to Paro Hospital for medical attention, but tragically, her life could not be saved despite the diligent efforts of on-site rescuers and hospital staff. Authorities have started standard procedures, including a post-mortem examination, to uncover the precise cause of death.

The tour group is left with profound sorrow; a senior figure from the local Bhutanese travel agency described the incident as one of the most distressing experiences of his career, mentioning he had never witnessed such a tragedy in his 26 years in the tourism business.

Condolences from Bhutanese authorities and royal family members have reached the victim’s family. The travel agency is cooperating with the woman’s relatives and her travel companion while liaising with pertinent authorities, including Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This tragic event underscores the health risks associated with high-altitude treks and the essential health precautions needed for mountainous destinations.
