A joyous New Year celebration at the upscale ski resort of Crans-Montana in Switzerland was shattered when a devastating fire erupted in the early hours of Thursday, claiming the lives of approximately 40 individuals and injuring more than 115, many critically.
The inferno ignited less than two hours post-midnight at the bustling Le Constellation bar, where masses had gathered to ring in 2026. The true capacity of the venue during the blaze remains uncertain, complicating efforts for rescue and identification amidst the chaos. In response to the tragedy, Switzerland has declared a period of mourning lasting five days.
Emergency personnel swiftly arrived as flames engulfed the structure, leading to the collapse of parts of the wooden ceiling. First responders, including fire and medical teams, labored for hours in thick smoke to save survivors and transport the wounded.
Valais Canton law enforcement stated that locating victims and notifying their families is of high priority, a task they anticipate will extend over several days. Officials confirmed that there is currently no evidence suggesting a deliberate attack, nor have any arrests been made. Investigators face challenges accessing the damaged premises due to safety concerns.
An inquiry has been initiated to uncover the cause of the fire. Authorities clarified that the investigation aims to determine how the incident occurred, not to assign blame at this point.
Among the deceased are several foreign nationals, including individuals from Italy. Some of the injured have been transferred to hospitals outside the area due to local facilities being overwhelmed.
Survivors recounted harrowing scenes of panic, with individuals gasping for air as they navigated narrow exits. Witnesses reported that windows were shattered as some sought to escape the thick smoke and roaring flames, while families gathered at the location searching for missing loved ones.
Local authorities have advised residents and tourists to remain vigilant in the coming days as emergency services remain heavily taxed during this peak ski season.
Swiss leaders have called for collective solidarity and compassion, labeling the incident as a profound moment of national sorrow and contemplation.
