Tragic Train Derailment in Thailand Claims 22 Lives After Crane Collapse

Post by : Meena Hassan

In a devastating incident on Wednesday morning, a passenger train in northeastern Thailand derailed, resulting in the deaths of at least 22 individuals and injuring more than 30 others due to a crane falling onto one of its carriages, authorities reported.

The tragedy took place in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, approximately 230 kilometers northeast of Bangkok. The train was en route from Thailand's capital to Ubon Ratchathani when the accident occurred.

Local police indicated that the crane was involved in construction work for a high-speed rail project adjacent to the rail line. As the train was passing, the crane unexpectedly collapsed, striking a carriage with considerable force, which led to multiple carriages derailing and a brief fire igniting inside part of the train.

Emergency services, including police, firefighting units, and medical personnel, were quickly dispatched to the site. Thick smoke billowed from the wreckage as rescue crews fought the blaze and searched for survivors. Firefighters successfully controlled the fire, preventing further spread along the train.

Rescue teams spent several hours under challenging conditions, using heavy equipment to cut through warped metal and damaged cars to assist trapped passengers. Several injured individuals were extricated from the wreckage and received first aid on-site before being rushed to local hospitals for advanced medical care.

Social media footage depicted frantic scenes at the accident site, with emergency workers carrying injured passengers from the debris scattered along the tracks. Authorities cordoned off the area to facilitate safe rescue operations and the recovery process.

Police confirmed that all injured passengers had been successfully evacuated and medical care was ongoing. Rail services on the affected route were temporarily halted while officials inspected the damage and worked on clearing the tracks.

An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the cause of the crane collapse. Officials are scrutinizing whether safety violations, mechanical issues, or human error contributed to the catastrophe. Further details have not yet been released.

This tragedy has heightened concerns regarding construction safety in the proximity of active railway lines, as authorities are under pressure to enforce stricter safety protocols during extensive infrastructure undertakings.
