Passenger Ferry Capsizes Near Basilan, Leaving 15 Confirmed Dead

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Manila, Philippines – The M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, a passenger ferry of Aleson Shipping Lines, tragically sank on January 26, 2026, during its route from Zamboanga City to Jolo, Sulu.

According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the disaster has resulted in at least 15 confirmed fatalities. At the time of the accident, the ferry was carrying approximately 332 passengers and 27 crew members.

The vessel reportedly faced technical difficulties, ultimately capsizing off the coast of Basilan, close to Baluk-Baluk Island. Survivors stated that a breach in the hull may have allowed water to flood the vessel swiftly.

Rescue operations, spearheaded by the Philippine Coast Guard, navy, and local authorities alongside fishing boats, are presently underway. Over 200 individuals have been saved, although several passengers remain unaccounted for. Medical teams are currently assisting injured survivors at various local hospitals.

Authorities are now probing into the events that led to the sinking. The Philippines has a documented history of ferry accidents attributed to adverse weather and safety concerns; a ferry fire in 2023 claimed more than 30 lives in the southern region.

As the situation evolves, search and rescue personnel are diligently working to locate any remaining survivors.
