flydubai Unveils First Sustainability Report and 5-Year ESG Strategy

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Dubai-based airline flydubai has released its first-ever Sustainability Report for 2025, marking a major step in the airline's long-term commitment to responsible growth. Titled "fly forward 2025," the report introduces a formal five-year sustainability strategy designed to strengthen environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices while supporting the airline's future expansion.

The report has been prepared with reference to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is structured around six core ESG pillars that focus on reducing environmental impact, supporting communities, strengthening governance and improving operational efficiency.

Five-Year Sustainability Strategy Backed by ESG Assessment

During 2025, flydubai completed its first comprehensive double materiality assessment. This assessment examined two key areas:

  • Impact materiality, which evaluates how the airline's operations affect the environment and society.
  • Financial materiality, which identifies how sustainability-related issues could influence the airline's enterprise value and business performance.

The findings have been used to create a five-year sustainability strategy with clearly defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure progress and guide future initiatives.

Sheikh Ahmed Highlights Responsibility Towards Future Generations

Commenting on the launch of the report, H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of flydubai, said the airline's responsibility extends beyond today's operations to future generations. "To lead a forward-thinking airline is to carry a responsibility that extends beyond the markets we serve to the generations who will inherit the outcomes of today's decisions. This inaugural Sustainability Report reflects that responsibility and flydubai's commitment to embedding it at the core of how the airline is governed. Guided by the UAE's vision for a net-zero, resilient future, we are determined to pursue growth that reflects the ambitions of our nation and honours the legacy we are shaping together."

He added that the report represents an important milestone as flydubai continues supporting Dubai's position as a leading global aviation hub through responsible growth.

CEO Says Sustainability Will Shape Future Growth

Ghaith Al Ghaith, Chief Executive Officer of flydubai, said sustainability will remain central to the airline's long-term strategy. "Sustainability will continue to guide flydubai's strategic direction as we continue to build a resilient and responsible future. Our first Sustainability Report marks an important milestone, reflecting the progress we have made and the clear direction we have set for responsible growth. In 2025, we completed our first comprehensive sustainability assessment and established a focused five-year strategy, enabling us to prioritise the areas where we can deliver the greatest impact. These efforts are essential to building a resilient organisation that can adapt to evolving industry and regulatory demands."

Six Core Pillars of "fly forward 2025"

The sustainability strategy is built around six key pillars that will guide flydubai's future initiatives.

Climate-Ready Operations

The airline aims to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions across its day-to-day operations to support climate action.

Environmental Stewardship

flydubai plans to minimise its environmental footprint through responsible resource management, waste circularity and wildlife protection.

People at Our Core

The airline will continue investing in its employees, supporting local communities and improving connectivity across the markets it serves.

Stronger Together

flydubai will work closely with suppliers that share its values, strengthen partnerships with organisations delivering positive social impact and continue supporting communities across its network.

Excellence in Safety, Compliance and Services

The airline will maintain a strong focus on safety management, regulatory compliance and delivering a consistent customer experience throughout every stage of travel.

Intelligent Aviation

Innovation will play a key role through the use of digital technologies, artificial intelligence and data analytics to improve fuel efficiency, enhance safety, reduce environmental impact and maintain operational excellence.

Technology Investments to Support Future Growth

The publication of the Sustainability Report marks the beginning of flydubai's sustainability reporting journey and reinforces its commitment to continuously improving both performance and transparency.

Looking ahead, the airline is expanding its technology capabilities through a landmark partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to introduce generative artificial intelligence across flight operations. It is also working with Starlink to bring high-speed, low-latency broadband connectivity across its fleet.

Supported by its extensive narrowbody aircraft order book and the future delivery of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, flydubai says it is well positioned to continue connecting more destinations with Dubai while pursuing efficient and responsible growth.
