5.5 Magnitude Quake Strikes Gansu, Thousands Evacuated

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Beijing: A 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit Tebo County within the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu Province, northwest China, this Monday, as reported by the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC).

The quake led to the evacuation of over 20,000 inhabitants to safety. Local officials confirmed that no casualties were recorded in the affected regions.

To respond to the emergency, public security forces deployed 350 police officers for search and rescue efforts, while the Gansu provincial fire and rescue team sent 340 members, 65 vehicles, and seven trained search dogs to assist in retrieval and provision of immediate care.

Officials noted minor structural damages occurred in a few buildings; however, fast action contributed to averting serious injuries. Relief teams are positioned across the area to monitor aftershocks and provide necessary help.

The local administration advises residents to remain alert and adhere to safety protocols from emergency services, continuing their assessments and fortifications of vulnerable structures.

This earthquake is among several tremors affecting northwest China, underscoring the critical need for preparedness and swift action in seismic areas. Authorities are ongoing in their evaluations to ensure public safety in the aftermath of the quake.
