George Russell secured victory in the sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix on Saturday, holding off strong competition from Ferrari drivers to extend his early lead in the Formula One standings.
The Mercedes driver started from pole position at the Shanghai International Circuit and maintained his advantage despite intense pressure from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Russell eventually crossed the finish line first after a late safety car period in the 19-lap sprint race.
Leclerc finished second, just 0.674 seconds behind Russell, while Hamilton secured third place. It marked the first time since the end of 2024 that Ferrari placed two drivers in the top three of any Formula One race format.
Russell and Hamilton battled closely in the early stages of the race. The two drivers exchanged the lead four times within the opening five laps, but Russell later made a decisive move that allowed him to take control and stay ahead until the finish. The sprint victory earned him eight championship points.
Reigning champion Lando Norris finished fourth for McLaren. Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli took fifth place after receiving a 10-second penalty for an opening-lap collision with Isack Hadjar of Red Bull Racing.
Oscar Piastri finished sixth for McLaren, followed by Liam Lawson in seventh for Racing Bulls. Oliver Bearman claimed the final point in eighth place for Haas F1 Team.
With the sprint win and his victory in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, Russell now leads the drivers’ championship with 33 points. Antonelli and Leclerc are tied for second with 22 points each, while Hamilton sits fourth with 18 points.
The result strengthens Russell’s position at the top of the standings early in the 2026 Formula One season.
