Global Leaders Convene at IPU 152nd Assembly in Istanbul

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has launched in Istanbul, gathering global parliamentary leaders to confront urgent worldwide issues concerning peace and governance.

The opening session featured a diverse array of speakers and legislative heads, notably including a delegation from Qatar's Shura Council, led by Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim.

Emphasis on Peace, Cooperation, and Development

During this session, leaders underscored the critical necessity for enhanced international legislative collaboration to address mounting global challenges. The discussions highlighted the imperative of preserving global peace and fostering sustainable development for coming generations.

This year's assembly, themed “Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations,” also included a recorded address from António Guterres. He pointed out vital global priorities such as peace, social equity, and the pursuit of sustainable development.

According to the IPU, this assembly is set against a backdrop of intricate global circumstances that call for coordinated, multi-tiered parliamentary actions. Major agenda items encompass international peace and security, governance in post-conflict scenarios, and the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Qatar's Focus on Climate Resilience

Qatar's involvement also extended to the 5th Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network, where lawmakers examined the importance of climate-resilient urban planning.

Speaking at the session, Ahmed bin Hitmi Al Hitmi highlighted the growing challenges climate change poses to developing countries, including resource depletion and environmental hazards. He advocated for enhanced urban development strategies that emphasize resilience.

He reiterated Qatar’s dedication to sustainability under its National Vision 2030, showcasing substantial investments in sustainable infrastructure, clean energy expansion, and improved resource utilization.

Additionally, he pointed out the essential role of the Shura Council in promoting these initiatives through legislative and oversight functions, emphasizing that global climate issues require enhanced parliamentary cooperation—especially in areas such as climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity building.
