Urgent Flood Action Initiated in Petaling Jaya

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Petaling Jaya, Malaysia: In response to the flash floods and landslide that struck parts of Petaling Jaya over the weekend, Gobind Singh Deo, the Member of Parliament for Damansara, has urged pertinent government departments and technical agencies to promptly devise a thorough action strategy.

An emergency meeting is set for Monday, gathering representatives from various organizations including the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), and the Fire and Rescue Department, to evaluate the current situation and propose both immediate and long-term strategies.

Call for Immediate Assessment and Solutions

After inspecting affected sites in Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara and Kampung Chempaka, Gobind emphasized that all agencies must prepare proposals to enhance resident safety and tackle the underlying causes of persistent flooding.

He noted that both short-term emergency responses and long-term infrastructure enhancements would be crucial to avert future disasters.

Gobind highlighted the need for rebuilding trust within the community, prioritizing the safety of neighborhoods before undertaking major repairs.

Community Safety Remains Paramount

Gobind reaffirmed that the main focus of the government should be protecting residents throughout the recovery phase.

During his visit, he observed significant road damage, including potholes and ongoing water flow beneath road surfaces, raising serious concerns regarding the structural integrity of local infrastructure.

Authorities must conduct thorough assessments of road safety, riverbank stability, and any hazards facing nearby properties before progressing with further work.

Prior Flood Mitigation Efforts in Place

Gobind mentioned that recommendations have already been made following previous flood events a few months ago, and preliminary mitigation measures have begun under the guidance of the project developer.

He stressed that all work stages should be monitored and approved by the appropriate government bodies, ensuring adherence to technical and legal standards.

Continuous oversight is crucial, but he called for enhanced collaboration among agencies to achieve a lasting solution.

Need for a Clear Flood Prevention Plan

Gobind urged agencies to be swift in finalizing a comprehensive action plan, reassuring residents that the government is addressing their concerns with urgency.

The goal is not just immediate safety, but also to adopt sustainable flood management strategies that mitigate the risk of future floods and landslides.

Medan Selera 223 Experiences Third Flood in Three Months

The recent flooding incident follows heavy rains on Saturday, causing flash floods at Medan Selera 223, a popular food destination in Petaling Jaya.

This marks the third flood occurrence at this site in under three months, raising alarms among residents, business owners, and local authorities regarding persistent drainage and flood management challenges.

Social media videos showed floodwaters rising dangerously close to waist level, disrupting normal business activities and impacting patrons in the area.

The ongoing flooding has intensified demands for improved flood prevention measures, better drainage systems, and the rapid implementation of long-term solutions to safeguard both businesses and nearby communities from future natural calamities.
