The finals of Green STEM 2026 took place in Hanoi, featuring 33 teams representing 19 schools nationwide. This event has become a pivotal educational initiative aimed at enhancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning, while promoting innovation, creativity, and a commitment to sustainability among Vietnamese students.
Coordinated by the Institute of Educational Sciences and Skills Development, under the auspices of the Association of Vietnamese Universities and Colleges, the competition's purpose is to advance practical STEM education and equip students for a fast-evolving digital economy. Experts underscore the necessity of competitions like Green STEM to cultivate future talent in sectors such as artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology, and environmental technology.
As per Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training, over 218,000 students enrolled in STEM-focused programs in 2024, which represents around 36 percent of total university enrollments in the country. Officials note that the rising interest in these fields mirrors Vietnam's aspiration to cultivate a highly skilled workforce ready to compete globally.
At the event, former Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Nguyen Quan highlighted the urgency for students to develop digital skills and scientific reasoning from a young age, advocating that STEM education should start at the primary school level to nurture problem-solving capabilities, innovation, and a technological mindset early on.
The format of Green STEM 2026 significantly diverged from conventional academic contests, focusing not solely on coding or robotics, but on students’ capabilities to address tangible issues linked to green energy and environmental sustainability. Participants were assessed on their creative processes, teamwork, critical thinking, and overall solution development, alongside the quality of their final submissions.
Numerous students illustrated remarkable projects that included automation systems, eco-friendly engineering techniques, renewable energy prototypes, and intelligent programming solutions. Many teams showcased commendable scientific reasoning and collaborative efforts by presenting actionable solutions aimed at promoting environmental conservation and technological futures.
A notable aspect of Green STEM 2026 was its alignment with the worldwide World GreenMech Contest. The most outstanding teams have the chance to engage in international STEM competitions, granting them valuable exposure beyond national boundaries. Organizers anticipate that this opportunity will inspire students to enhance their innovative and research capacities.
Education experts assert that Green STEM 2026 marks a significant advancement toward the modernization of Vietnam's education landscape, encouraging youths to adopt creativity, scientific inquiry, and innovation. This competition further reinforces the country's dedication to equipping students for future roles in digital transformation and sustainable economic growth.
