Tensions flared in Imphal West district of Manipur as thousands disregarded curfew orders to hold a torchlight demonstration calling for justice following a tragic bombing incident.
Defying Curfew Restrictions
The protest commenced around 7 PM on Thursday in Singjamei, with demonstrators bearing torches and demanding the arrest of those behind the April 7 blast in Tronglaobi, Bishnupur, which resulted in the deaths of two young children.
Rally Progresses to Sensitive Areas
The march covered over two kilometers, arriving at Chingamathak—an area near significant administrative and security installations such as the Chief Minister's residence and police headquarters.
Rising Tensions with Security Forces
Protesters began chanting anti-security slogans, prompting confrontations with the outnumbered security personnel. Efforts to disperse the crowd were met with resistance as strict prohibitory orders were already in effect.
This situation quickly spiraled into a violent confrontation.
Confrontations and Crowd Control Measures
In reaction to the unrest, security forces employed baton charges and deployed tear gas. Reportedly, some protesters retaliated by throwing stones, exacerbating the turmoil.
Injuries and Ongoing Law-and-Order Issues
Multiple individuals sustained injuries during the chaos, with five requiring treatment for minor wounds and breathing issues due to tear gas exposure at a nearby healthcare facility. Authorities emphasized the continuation of strict curfews, with night-time movements restricted across various regions in light of previous violence linked to the bombing.
Officials indicated concerns about certain factions potentially exploiting the unrest and targeting security forces.
