The Board of Control for Cricket in India has revealed the squad for the much-anticipated one-off Test and three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, commencing June 6. Key highlights include the return of experienced players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the ODI matches, while pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will be resting.
Young talent Shubman Gill has been designated as the captain for both the Test and ODI series, reinforcing the team management's long-term leadership strategy. KL Rahul assumes the role of vice-captain for the Test, alongside Shreyas Iyer who will assist Gill in the ODIs.
Selectors have confirmed the inclusion of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya in the ODI lineup, subject to fitness tests and BCCI guidelines. This strategic move reflects the management’s intention to keep experienced players in contention as the international calendar ramps up.
A significant decision made was the resting of Jasprit Bumrah during these matches, a move aimed at workload management. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar mentioned that Bumrah is being preserved for the crucial tour to England later this summer, focusing on his fitness and bowling load.
Several young cricketers have been granted their first call-ups to the national side following standout performances in domestic leagues and the IPL. Harsh Dubey, Gurnoor Brar, and Manav Suthar will participate in the Test series, with Prince Yadav making his debut in ODIs. Additionally, veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been rested to pave the way for emerging talents.
The ODI lineup boasts a formidable batting order featuring Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, and Nitish Reddy, while the bowling unit will be spearheaded by Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, and Prasidh Krishna, along with new talents. The Test squad is expected to see significant contributions from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Sai Sudharsan, and Mohammed Siraj.
India will kick off the Afghanistan series with the one-off Test in Mullanpur on June 6, followed by ODIs in Dharamsala, Lucknow, and Chennai. Fans are eagerly looking forward to witnessing veteran players return alongside promising new faces in the national arena.
