India delivered a dominant performance to defeat New Zealand and win the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday. The victory secured India's third T20 World Cup title, making them the first team in history to achieve this milestone.
Led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian team outplayed New Zealand in all departments to register a massive 96-run victory in front of a packed crowd in Ahmedabad.
India Post Record Total in Final
Batting first, India produced a powerful batting display and posted 255/5, the highest team total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final.
Sanju Samson gave India a strong start with a brilliant 89 runs from 46 balls, while Abhishek Sharma played an explosive knock of 52 runs from just 21 balls.
Later in the innings, Ishan Kishan added further momentum by scoring 54 runs off 25 balls, helping India reach a huge total.
Bowlers Dominate as New Zealand Collapse
Chasing a massive target of 256, New Zealand struggled to build partnerships and kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav made a key tactical move by introducing Axar Patel early in the third over, which resulted in the crucial wicket of Finn Allen.
Although Tim Seifert scored a fighting half-century, the rest of the batting lineup failed to handle India’s bowling attack.
Jasprit Bumrah delivered a match-winning spell, taking 4 wickets for 15 runs, while Axar Patel supported him with 3 wickets for 27 runs. New Zealand were eventually bowled out for 159 runs.
Historic Achievement for India
With this victory, India created several major records in T20 World Cup history:
First team to win the T20 World Cup three times
First team to successfully defend the title after winning in 2024
First team to win the tournament on home soil
After the match, captain Suryakumar Yadav said the achievement would take time to fully sink in and praised fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, calling him a “national treasure.”
The win marks the beginning of what many believe could be a new era of dominance for the Indian cricket team in T20 cricket.
