Indonesia Achieves 86% Reduction in Forest Fires

Post by : Shakul

In a notable achievement, Indonesia has reported an 86% decline in forest and land fires over the past decade, according to Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni.

During the 21st session of the United Nations Forum on Forests held at the UN headquarters in New York, the minister highlighted that this progress stems from improved preventive measures and effective monitoring.

Minister Raja Juli shared that the government implemented integrated early warning systems, reinforced law enforcement, and initiated community-based prevention efforts in high-risk areas.

He emphasized that this progress is part of Indonesia’s comprehensive climate action strategy under President Prabowo Subianto, which aims at sustainable forest stewardship and ecological management.

Additionally, the nation experienced a further reduction in instances of forest and land fires during the 2024-2025 timeframe, attributed to quicker emergency responses and better hotspot monitoring by collaborative field teams.

Despite these advancements, Raja Juli cautioned that the threat of climate change remains elevated this year, with forecasts predicting the return of the El Nino phenomenon at low to moderate intensities starting in June.

He stressed that an extended dry season could heighten the risk of new fires and called for increased preparedness and vigilance nationwide.

Indonesia has previously encountered severe forest fire crises that not only led to haze pollution affecting neighboring nations but also resulted in substantial environmental and economic consequences across Southeast Asia.
