Argentina Investigates Hantavirus Outbreak on Antarctica Cruise Ship

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Argentina's health authorities are inquiring whether the nation was the origin of a deadly hantavirus outbreak reported on a cruise ship currently docked offshore.

The vessel had set sail from Argentina towards Antarctica when several passengers began to exhibit symptoms associated with hantavirus, a rare but serious disease carried by rodents. Officials aim to establish the source and onset of these infections.

This investigation takes place as Argentina observes a significant uptick in hantavirus cases nationwide. The Ministry of Health notes that 101 cases have been logged since June 2025, nearly twice the figures from the same timeframe last year.

Many public health experts in Argentina suspect that climate change may be influencing the rising infection rates by impacting rodent populations and their habitats.

The World Health Organization designates Argentina as having one of the highest rates of hantavirus in Latin America.

Hantavirus primarily transmits to humans through contact with contaminated rodent excreta including urine, droppings, or saliva. In extreme cases, the disease can lead to severe respiratory issues and potential fatalities if not treated promptly.

Health officials are actively monitoring the situation on the cruise ship as investigations continue.
