Saudi Arabia’s Defense Ministry announced it successfully shot down 13 Iranian‑origin drones over the capital Riyadh and the Eastern Province on Wednesday, underscoring the escalation of regional tensions as the ongoing Gulf conflict intensifies.
The ministry confirmed that Saudi air defense systems intercepted and destroyed the unmanned aerial vehicles, but did not provide details on any casualties or damage to infrastructure or civilians from the attacks.
This wave of interceptions occurs amid sustained aerial assaults linked to Iran’s retaliation against U.S. and allied strikes, which have drawn neighboring states deeper into a widening war dynamic across the Gulf.
Recent days have seen a pattern of multiple drone and missile threats across Gulf states, with Saudi Arabia and other regional partners reporting frequent interceptions of Iranian drones targeting critical population centers and energy facilities.
Despite the high volume of hostile launches, Saudi authorities have emphasized that vital infrastructure and major urban areas remain under defensive control and that security forces are actively monitoring airspace to counter ongoing threats.
Meanwhile, regional capitals including Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates have also faced or reported similar attempts of aerial attacks, illustrating how the broader Middle East conflict is spilling into neighboring nations.
Global leaders continue diplomatic pressure for de‑escalation even as military engagements persist, while local populations remain alert to repeated warnings regarding aerial threats and air defense readiness.
