Iran's Clergy Remains in Control Amidst Escalating Protests

Nationwide protests in Iran, incited by soaring prices and a plummeting currency, have led to streets filled with citizens demanding reforms. However, even with weeks of unrest, stringent crackdowns, and mounting foreign pressure, the country's clerical regime shows remarkable resilience.

Experts attribute this situation to the robust and unified security apparatus in Iran. The leadership enjoys the support of formidable entities like the Revolutionary Guards and the Basij militia, comprising nearly a million personnel. These factions are well-coordinated, intensely loyal to the regime, and strategically placed across the nation, complicating any attempts to dismantle the government through protests alone.

According to an Iranian official cited by Reuters, roughly 2,000 individuals have lost their lives during this upheaval, although human rights organizations report lower figures. Additionally, thousands have been detained. This heavy-handed response has deterred many from protesting, even as resentment continues to brew beneath the surface.

Experts contend that protests typically succeed only when segments of the state start to fracture. In Iran, however, there have been no unmistakable signs of significant defections among military, intelligence, or political elites. As long as such fractures do not emerge at the upper echelons, the regime can weather the storm, even if it is considerably weakened.

At 86 years old, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has navigated through multiple waves of protests since 2009, marking this as the fifth significant uprising during his tenure. Historically, the system has demonstrated an ability to regroup and maintain its grip on power, notwithstanding declining public trust.

The situation is exacerbated by external pressures. U.S. President Donald Trump has openly criticized Iran's handling of the protests, suggesting military options are still under consideration. These threats follow last year’s strikes on Iran’s nuclear installations and high-ranking officials by Israel and the U.S. Nevertheless, analysts believe that external pressure alone is insufficient to topple the leadership unless it leads to fragmentation within the state.

The challenges confronting Iran extend far beyond these protests. Economic sanctions have devastated the economy, leaving limited prospects for rapid recovery. Allies once part of the so-called “Axis of Resistance” are weakened by conflicts in regions such as Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza. Moreover, setbacks have plagued Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Despite this precarious situation, survival does not equate to stability. Many analysts argue that Iran is encountering one of its most profound crises since the 1979 revolution. Public trust is in sharp decline, with anger rising. What began as an economic protest has swiftly evolved into a widespread repudiation of clerical authority.

Currently, the regime remains intact, as it continues to wield control over the military, judiciary, and key pillars of power. Until there is a shift in this balance, Iran's leaders are likely to persist, even as the nation grapples with deep divisions and ongoing pressures.
