In a notable escalation of the ongoing Middle East conflict, Israel has executed a targeted strike against the newly appointed head of Hamas' armed wing in Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the operation specifically aimed at Mohammed Odeh, who recently assumed leadership of Hamas’ military division following the assassination of his predecessor earlier this month.
Israeli officials noted that Mohammed Odeh previously oversaw Hamas’ intelligence unit and is regarded as one of the remaining high-ranking members of the organization’s military command. Netanyahu asserted that Odeh played a role in the Hamas assaults on October 7, 2023, which set off the current hostilities. While Israeli authorities have yet to verify if Odeh was killed in the operation, local media and defense sources later indicated that the strike achieved its objective.
The strike reportedly targeted an apartment complex in Gaza City’s Rimal neighborhood. Local health officials reported several fatalities and over 20 injuries as a result of the attack, which destroyed the upper levels of the residential building. Rescue crews continued to sift through wreckage for any survivors hours after the explosion. Hamas has not yet provided an official update on Odeh's status or acknowledged his new role as the military chief.
This latest military action coincides with an increase in pressure from Israel on multiple fronts, as Israeli forces have also intensified operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon. According to Israeli officials, the broader efforts seek to undermine armed factions associated with Hamas and Iranian-supported groups active in the region.
Mohammed Odeh has taken over for Izz al-Din al-Haddad, a senior Hamas commander claimed by Israel to have been killed in an earlier operation on May 15. Security experts suggest that Israel's ongoing strategy is centered on dismantling Hamas’ leadership to diminish the group's operational capabilities and command structure within Gaza.
Meanwhile, peace talks between Israel and Hamas remain at a standstill, amid international diplomatic attempts to mediate. Israel is adamant about securing the release of captives and the disarmament of Hamas, while the latter demands an unconditional ceasefire and a complete Israeli exit from Gaza before entertaining further negotiations. This persistent stalemate is aggravating the humanitarian crisis and raising apprehension about escalating regional tensions.
The conflict, ignited by Hamas attacks inside Israel in October 2023, has resulted in widespread devastation and significant casualties on both sides. Authorities in Gaza report that tens of thousands of Palestinians have died since the outbreak of hostilities, while Israeli sources quantify over 1,200 fatalities stemming from the initial Hamas assaults. International agencies are continually urging for humanitarian access and renewed diplomatic discussions as the violence rages through Gaza and adjacent areas.
