Two Killed in Israeli Drone Strike in Southern Lebanon, Hezbollah Responds

Post by : Bianca Haleem

A drone strike launched by Israel in southern Lebanon has tragically claimed two lives, as reported by Lebanese state media. Hezbollah has condemned the incident, branding it a violation of the ongoing ceasefire agreement.

The National News Agency (NNA) of Lebanon disclosed that the drone targeted a vehicle close to Kfar Rumman, with the strike resulting in the loss of two individuals.

Israeli Forces State Targets Were Hezbollah Members

Earlier in the day, the Israeli military indicated that its operation was aimed at “two armed Hezbollah operatives” located in the Ali al-Taher Ridge area, near Nabatieh, citing that the men posed a potential threat. Israel has pledged to continue operations to neutralize these threats.

The military further explained that the drone also hit a vehicle transporting suspects perceived as a threat to the safety of Israeli troops in the security zone around Ali al-Taher Ridge.

Hezbollah Denounces the Drone Strike

In a robust response, Hezbollah condemned the attack, asserting that it constitutes a clear infringement of the ceasefire arrangement.

The Iran-backed militia accused Israeli forces of deliberately targeting Lebanese civilians who were engaged in routine checks on their properties near Kfar Rumman, stating that this is the second attack on citizens within 48 hours.

Hezbollah maintains its commitment to the ceasefire while condemning Israel’s actions, which they consider a blatant violation. The group is actively documenting these incidents for assessment.

Ongoing Tensions at the Border

This bombing comes on the heels of an incident a day earlier, where Israeli gunfire resulted in two fatalities in southern Lebanon.

Tensions escalated between Israel and Hezbollah on March 2, when Hezbollah fired rockets into Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader linked to U.S.-Israeli operations.

In response, Israel launched an extensive aerial assault and ground offensive, which Lebanese officials report has accounted for over 4,100 deaths within Lebanon.

Diplomatic Efforts Underway Amid Hostilities

Earlier this week, mediators Pakistan and Qatar announced that Iran and the United States have agreed to establish a “de-confliction cell” to help quell rising tensions in Lebanon, as discussions were held in Switzerland to address the broader Middle East conflict.

Iran has connected the resolution of regional disputes to progress in ending hostilities specifically in Lebanon.

Israel’s Military Presence in Southern Lebanon

Despite a recent decrease in violence, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz affirmed that Israeli troops will maintain their presence in southern Lebanon, asserting there are no current orders from the U.S. for withdrawal.

Separation of Lebanon-Israel Talks from Iran-U.S. Negotiations

Faced with U.S. pressure, Lebanese officials initiated direct conversations with Israel in Washington this April, striving to keep these discussions distinct from broader U.S.-Iran negotiations.

On Wednesday, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun reiterated this stance, emphasizing the independence of the Washington discussions from the outcomes of recent talks between U.S. and Iranian officials in Switzerland.
