Jaishankar's Visit to UAE: A Focus on Energy Security

Jaishankar's Visit to UAE: A Focus on Energy Security

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Union Minister for External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar has landed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday, marking the first visit of an Indian minister to the Gulf region following the escalation of tensions linked to Iran. This visit largely aims to bolster India’s energy security amidst geopolitical strife.

Coinciding with Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri's ongoing talks in Qatar, this trip is pivotal as India seeks to secure extra LNG supplies following production disruptions due to the Strait of Hormuz issues. With Qatar contributing nearly 4% of India's total LNG imports, it proves to be an essential energy ally.

Earlier this week at the Indian Ocean Conference in Mauritius, Jaishankar underscored India's commitment to solidifying a government-to-government agreement for oil and gas supply with Mauritius, signaling India's emerging role as a regional energy supplier while attending to its domestic needs.

The timing of Jaishankar’s visit is significant, occurring during a delicate diplomatic phase as India navigates its relations amidst increased instability in West Asia. He also dispelled rumors surrounding a blanket agreement with Iran concerning safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, which clarifies India's stance regarding the recent energy shipment situation.

This diplomatic effort coincides with discussions in the region, including dialogues between Iran and the United States, aimed at easing tensions. It underscores India's commitment to safeguarding its citizens, particularly after several faced travel disruptions during the conflict.

During his stay, Jaishankar is set to engage in discussions with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other key officials. Their agenda will likely encompass energy collaboration, regional security, and the well-being of the Indian diaspora in the UAE.

This visit follows recent high-profile exchanges between India and the UAE, such as the visit by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to India, reflecting the deepening bilateral relationship.
