A dedicated 17-year-old student from the British School Jakarta is spearheading a campaign to integrate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training in schools throughout Indonesia. Russell James Young, founder of Beatkeepers Collective, aims to empower youth with lifesaving skills, potentially improving survival rates in emergencies.
This initiative was prominently featured at the Jakarta Scholars Symposium 2026, where students showcased projects aimed at making a significant social impact. Russell's venture stood out due to its emphasis on public health and emergency readiness—areas that often receive insufficient attention in educational settings.
Data from the Indonesian Cardiology Association (PERKI) indicates that roughly 10 out of every 100,000 individuals under 35 in Indonesia experience cardiac arrest. Furthermore, the country sees around 300,000 to 350,000 cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest each year. Unfortunately, only a fraction of these individuals receive prompt assistance from bystanders prior to the arrival of medical professionals.
Russell contends that enhancing awareness and practical understanding of CPR can help fill this crucial gap. Through Beatkeepers Collective, he advocates for increased accessibility to basic first-aid and resuscitation training for students, empowering them to react decisively during emergencies.
The initiative emphasizes hands-on learning, community involvement, and awareness campaigns aimed at fostering a culture of preparedness. By equipping young people with effective emergency response skills, the program aspires to cultivate a generation capable of delivering immediate aid when every moment is vital.
Health specialists have continually highlighted that prompt CPR intervention can significantly enhance survival rates post-cardiac arrest. Nonetheless, a lack of public awareness and training resources continues to impede emergency response capabilities across numerous Indonesian communities.
Russell's endeavors showcase the rising influence of youth leadership in tackling social and health challenges. As the Beatkeepers Collective broadens its outreach, the initiative has the potential to motivate schools, educators, and policymakers to incorporate lifesaving training into standard curriculums, contributing to the development of safer, more resilient communities throughout the nation.
