Japan's Defence Strategy Under Review as Tensions Escalate

Post by : Shakul

In response to rising regional tensions, Sanae Takaichi has initiated a comprehensive review of Japan's defence and security strategies. Concerns surrounding the military actions of China, North Korea, and Russia have prompted this significant move.

A 15-member expert panel comprising diplomats, defence analysts, and economists will scrutinize the existing security policies. Their goal is to recommend enhancements that bolster Japan's military readiness against shifting global threats.

Prime Minister Takaichi highlighted the drastic changes in the global security landscape, asserting that the post-Cold War order can no longer be deemed stable. She stressed the importance of adapting Japan's strategies to navigate this evolving and precarious environment.

The review aims to equip Japan for contemporary warfare methods, including the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as drones. The government anticipates that upcoming conflicts could be prolonged and intricate, necessitating a robust defence strategy and proactive planning.

Recently, Japan’s policy shift allowed the export of lethal weapons, signaling a transformative step in its defence sector. This change not only paves the way for enhanced domestic military capabilities but also fosters deeper collaboration with allies like the United States. Nonetheless, this decision has garnered criticism from pacifist factions in Japan and from China.

Furthermore, Japan is on track to increase its defence expenditures to 2 percent of GDP by 2027, amounting to approximately 43 trillion yen, surpassing initial projections. The new panel is tasked with evaluating whether even greater spending will be needed moving forward.

Analysts suggest that this review signals a pivotal transformation in Japan’s post-war defence posture. With escalating geopolitical tensions, the country is positioning itself for a more proactive military stance to safeguard its national security and foster stability across the region.
