Amidst the rugged terrain of Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian security personnel have exposed a well-concealed terrorist hideout associated with Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). Situated at an elevation of approximately 12,000 feet, this bunker presented formidable challenges for survival due to harsh weather conditions.
This hideaway, built in a Kargil-like structure, has remained under wraps for several months. It features robust stone walls reinforced with multiple access points, designed to endure military strikes and gunfire.
Upon further investigation, security forces discovered evidence that the terrorists were equipped to withstand the severe winter. Found supplies included around 50 packets of instant noodles, 20 kilograms of premium basmati rice, an assortment of fresh vegetables such as potatoes and tomatoes, grains, cooking gas cylinders, dry firewood, and nearly 15 varieties of spices—sufficient provisions for an extended duration.
Authorities suspect that the bunker was utilized by a high-ranking JeM commander, Saifullah, along with his deputy, Adil. The sophistication and strategic placement of the hideout hint at substantial logistical support.
During an attempted advance by troops on Sunday afternoon, the terrorists resorted to throwing grenades to thwart progress, resulting in injuries to seven soldiers. Tragically, Havildar Gajendra Singh succumbed to his wounds, demonstrating exceptional bravery in service.
The discovery of the bunker has unveiled the existence of a local support system. Intelligence suggests that the transport of extensive supplies to such an elevated location necessitated assistance from nearby residents. Consequently, four locals have been apprehended for questioning.
Operation Trashi-I, aimed at neutralizing remaining threats, is still in progress. The expansive search entered its third day on Tuesday, with security forces actively scouring mountainous and forested regions to capture the remaining terrorists.
This operation follows a prior counter-terror initiative launched in December, targeting nearly thirty terrorists hiding in Jammu's forested peripheries.
With India’s Republic Day on the horizon, security protocols have been heightened. Intelligence has flagged potential efforts by border handlers to dispatch additional terrorists into the area. Authorities stress the importance of these escalated operations for maintaining public safety and ensuring peaceful celebrations.
The unearthing of this mountainous bunker is hailed as a remarkable achievement for security agencies, representing a significant blow to terrorist factions operating in Jammu and Kashmir's remote regions.
