Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that the United States has given Ukraine and Russia a deadline until June to reach an agreement to end the war, which is now close to four years old.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Zelensky said the Trump administration wants the conflict to end by the beginning of summer. He added that if the deadline is not met, the US is likely to put pressure on both Ukraine and Russia to move the process forward.
“The Americans are proposing that the parties end the war by the beginning of this summer,” Zelensky said. He also said Washington wants a clear and fixed schedule for all key events linked to the peace process.
Zelensky also revealed that the United States has proposed holding the next round of trilateral talks next week on US soil for the first time. According to him, the talks may take place in Miami. He said Ukraine has confirmed its participation.
The latest deadline comes after US-brokered trilateral talks held in Abu Dhabi, which did not lead to any major breakthrough. The two sides continue to stick to sharply different demands.
Russia is pushing Ukraine to withdraw from the Donbas region, where fighting remains intense. However, Zelensky said Kyiv will never accept this condition.
