In an extraordinary display of bowling, West Indies all-rounder Justin Greaves has entered the annals of Test cricket as the first bowler to take wickets in five consecutive maiden overs during the opening Test match against Pakistan.
This remarkable achievement unfolded on day three of the World Test Championship, where Greaves notched up career-best statistics of 5 for 27, enabling the West Indies to gain a critical advantage in the match.
Pakistan seemed to have a strong grip on the game with a score of 244-3, driven by Shan Masood’s century (109).
However, Greaves ignited a stunning collapse by taking out Masood and then dismissing Aamer Jamal, Ali Usman, and Mohammad Rizwan in successive maiden overs without allowing any runs.
He capped off this historic feat post-lunch by claiming Mohammad Abbas, thereby making history as the first bowler to achieve wickets in five back-to-back maiden overs in Test cricket.
Greaves has broken the record previously set by Stuart Broad, who achieved four consecutive wicket maidens against South Africa back in 2016.
This also marks Greaves' first five-wicket haul in Test cricket since he debuted.
Reflecting on his performance post-match, Greaves credited captain Roston Chase for advising him to maintain discipline while consistently attacking with a precise line and length.
He noted that the conditions favored bowlers and expressed his satisfaction at reaching such a milestone, although he acknowledged that plenty of work remained in the match.
Eventually, Pakistan was all out for 282, trailing West Indies' first-innings total of 311 by 29 runs.
Despite Pakistan's efforts to reduce West Indies to 126-7 by the end of the day’s play, the home side retains an overall lead of 155 runs, setting the stage for an exciting finish as the fourth day approaches.
