Kabul: A severe earthquake struck Afghanistan on Friday, resulting in the tragic collapse of a residential home in the capital, Kabul, which killed at least eight individuals and left one child injured, as per officials' reports.
The National Disaster Management Authority indicated that the incident occurred shortly after intense seismic activity rocked the area, leading to various structural damages.
This earthquake, recorded at a magnitude of 5.9, originated in the Hindu Kush region, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake's epicenter was located around 177 kilometers deep, allowing its effects to be felt far and wide across neighboring territories.
Observers noted that the tremors were also felt in distant cities such as Islamabad (Pakistan) and New Delhi (India).
Given its mountainous landscape, Afghanistan frequently faces natural disasters, especially earthquakes, with average annual fatalities around 560 due to seismic events.
A previous earthquake of magnitude 6.3 in November left 27 dead and caused considerable destruction, damaging numerous homes across the region.
Rescue and evaluation efforts are ongoing in affected areas, raising alarms regarding the structural integrity of buildings in regions susceptible to earthquakes.
