Kim Jong Un Celebrates New Year with Daughter in Pyongyang Festivities

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, welcomed the New Year during celebrations in Pyongyang, marking the start of 2026, as reported by state media. The vibrant event featured fireworks, patriotic music, traditional dances, and a taekwondo show, giving a rare glimpse into public festivities in the nation.

His daughter, Kim Ju Ae, made an appearance alongside him, having been seen at numerous significant events in recent years. Images shared by the Korean Central News Agency displayed them together, holding hands and interacting with children, capturing moments that seemed carefully orchestrated to project a united and approachable leadership.

During his New Year message, Kim lauded the contributions of the North Korean populace in 2025, noting that the year brought vital advancements and transformations. He emphasized the need for national unity ahead of an important political gathering anticipated for early 2026. This meeting, referred to as the 9th Congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, aims to outline North Korea's course for the upcoming five years.

This congress is deemed one of the most crucial political occasions in North Korea, expected to establish aims related to economic policy, defense strategies, and arms development. Previous congresses have historically served to declare long-term plans and strengthen the leadership's vision for the nation.

Additionally, Kim conveyed a New Year message to North Korean soldiers deployed alongside Russian forces in the Ukraine conflict, calling them a crucial support for the nation and expressing hope for their return. This message underscored the strong bond between Pyongyang and Moscow.

Furthermore, state media conveyed that Kim received New Year greetings from multiple world leaders, including the Chinese president and his spouse, although specifics were not disclosed. This brief acknowledgment implied that North Korea is maintaining diplomatic relations with its allies.

Kim Ju Ae’s frequent public appearances have piqued the interest of external observers. Analysts speculate that these might indicate a potential future leadership role, although there have been no official announcements regarding succession.

As 2026 unfolds, the New Year celebration in Pyongyang sent a potent message of confidence and stability. Through speeches, performances, and the strategic release of images, North Korea's leadership underscored unity at home and mapped out its priorities for the forthcoming year.
