The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) announced on Saturday the release of Bangladesh bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad for the upcoming IPL 2026 season, adhering to a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
According to an official KKR statement, this decision followed instructions from the BCCI, the governing body for the IPL. The franchise confirmed that all necessary formalities were completed before the release, in compliance with league regulations. The BCCI has also permitted KKR to seek a replacement player, with more information to come shortly.
Earlier, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia indicated that the board had requested KKR to let go of Mustafizur due to “recent developments.” He reassured that KKR would have the opportunity to recruit a new player as dictated by IPL rules.
This decision surfaces amid a political controversy linked to Mustafizur’s inclusion, sparked by reports of violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, which led to widespread criticism regarding his participation in IPL 2026.
KKR secured Mustafizur for ₹9.20 crore during the IPL auction last December, marking a notable shift in their lineup as the new season approaches.
BJP leader Sangeet Singh Som endorsed the decision, describing it as a reflection of public sentiment. He also directed comments towards KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, stating that the move aligns with the feelings of people in India.
As the IPL 2026 season nears, KKR is ready to announce a replacement as they adjust their squad in light of the BCCI’s directive.
