Lindsey Vonn Makes Inspiring Olympic Return at 41 in Cortina

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Lindsey Vonn, the renowned American skier, is making a remarkable Olympic comeback at the age of 41 in the Milan-Cortina Games. As a former downhill gold medalist, she continues to defy age and expectations.

Vonn's Olympic journey began in Salt Lake City 2002, where she finished sixth in the combined event at only 17, competing under her maiden name, Kildow. She debuted in the World Cup in December 2004.

At Torino 2006, she endured a crash during downhill training, leading to a hospital stay, yet she managed to place eighth in downhill and seventh in super-G, also finishing 14th in slalom.

Her pivotal moment came at Vancouver 2010 when she secured gold in downhill and a bronze in super-G, marking the USA's first women’s Olympic downhill gold. She faced difficulties in slalom, giant slalom, and combined races, leading to some “did not finishes” (DNFs).

After missing the Sochi 2014 Olympics due to a serious knee injury from the 2013 Schladming World Championships, she returned to win bronze in downhill and joint-sixth in super-G at Pyeongchang 2018, where she declared it would be her last Olympics.

Vonn retired post-2019 World Championships and opted out of Beijing 2022, holding the record for being the oldest female racer to win a medal at age 34 while earning medals across six different World Championships.

Since retirement, she has made an impressive return, clinching two World Cup downhill races and accumulating 12 career victories at Cortina (six downhill, six super-G).

While US teammate Mikaela Shiffrin has outpaced her with 108 World Cup wins, Vonn's experience and tenacity position her as a formidable contender in Milan-Cortina.

Lindsey Vonn's Olympic return stands as one of sports' most inspiring comebacks, underscoring that age cannot hinder greatness.
