Queen Elizabeth II's Iconic Lotus Gown from India Now at Buckingham Palace

Post by : Bianca Haleem

London: A stunning evening gown inspired by the lotus, India’s national flower, is now showcased in London as part of a significant exhibition honoring the fashion legacy of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Crafted by renowned royal designer Norman Hartnell, this gown was made for a state dinner hosted by then President Dr. Rajendra Prasad in New Delhi in January 1961. It stands out among the highlights of the “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style” exhibition, located in the King’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace.

The silk gown is elegantly adorned with intricate zardozi-style thread embroidery resembling lotus flowers. It incorporates lace, pearl beads, crystals, and sequins, showcasing the beauty of traditional Indian artistry and its cultural significance.

As noted by the exhibition's curator, the lotus design was intentionally selected as it represents India's national flower, making it a fitting tribute for the Queen's visit.

Originally featuring a long train flowing from the Queen’s shoulders, the gown was later modified to include a short bolero jacket for versatile wear.

This exhibition also emphasizes how Queen Elizabeth II utilized fashion as a tool for diplomacy during her international travels. Another gown from the Queen’s 1961 Commonwealth tour, worn at a state banquet in Karachi, was crafted with Pakistan’s national colors and showcased a striking emerald-green pleat.

Curators highlighted that designers Norman Hartnell and Hardy Amies meticulously created culturally sensitive outfits for the Queen’s 1961 itinerary across India, Pakistan, and Nepal.

This tour was particularly significant as it marked the first visit by a reigning British monarch to India following its independence. During this landmark journey, Queen Elizabeth II was also the Guest of Honour at India's Republic Day Parade.

Organized in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth centenary, the exhibition pays homage to Britain’s longest-serving monarch, who passed away in September 2022 at age 96.

Caroline de Guitaut, the exhibition's curator and Surveyor of the King’s Works of Art, expressed that the display honors the Queen's thoughtful fashion decisions and the exquisite craftsmanship behind her wardrobe throughout her reign.

Featuring over 300 outfits and accessories, the exhibition covers nearly every phase of Queen Elizabeth II’s life—from her early years as a princess to her time as monarch. Visitors will also discover rare design sketches, fabric samples, and handwritten notes that reveal the meticulous craft of royal outfit creation.

Open to the public until October, this exhibition at Buckingham Palace is being hailed as one of the most extensive royal fashion exhibitions ever undertaken.
