Marine Le Pen Proposes France's NATO Command Withdrawal if Elected

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Far-right figure Marine Le Pen proposed that, if elected in the 2027 presidential race, France should sever ties with NATO’s integrated military command.

In an interview with BFM TV on Friday, Le Pen emphasized that while she believes France should stay in NATO, it ought to exit the alliance’s permanent military command structure. She argues that this change would allow France to reclaim a greater degree of independence in its defense strategies.

Le Pen criticized Europe’s reliance on the United States, claiming that decisions influenced by U.S. President Donald Trump adversely affect European nations.

She proposed that France should continue its cooperation with allied nations while opting out of NATO’s integrated command system.

This proposal met with staunch opposition from France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, who labeled it “irresponsible” during a NATO ministers meeting in Sweden. He stressed that in the face of rising security threats, France should aim to enhance its cooperation with NATO rather than withdraw.

Barrot cautioned that such a withdrawal could be perceived as a betrayal by European allies currently under pressure from Russia.

The NATO debate in France has been longstanding; former President Charles de Gaulle exited NATO’s integrated military command in 1966 to ensure national strategic independence, but France re-entered under President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2009.

Le Pen's statements arise amid increased defense spending across Europe spurred by Russia's ongoing aggression in Ukraine. Many political factions in France, including Le Pen's National Rally, are advocating for higher military budgets in parliament.

Currently, her party is leading in various opinion polls as the 2027 presidential election approaches, although her candidacy is pending a verdict from an appeals court this year.
