Turkmenistan's President Welcomes Italian Ambassador in Ashgabat

On April 15, 2026, the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, received Martin Brugy, the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Italy, during a meeting in Ashgabat.

Ambassador Brugy presented his credentials, expressing appreciation for his new role in Turkmenistan, while conveying warm regards from Italian President Sergio Mattarella to the Turkmen leadership.

In return, President Berdimuhamedov congratulated the ambassador on his new position, wishing him success in enhancing the bilateral relationship. He also extended his own greetings to President Mattarella, reaffirming Turkmenistan's dedication to maintaining strong diplomatic connections.

The talks underscored the significance of cooperation between Turkmenistan and European Union nations, with Italy identified as a vital partner. Both representatives acknowledged their cooperative efforts within international bodies such as the United Nations, the European Union, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

They explored opportunities to bolster collaboration in multiple areas including trade, economy, energy, transport, logistics, and agriculture. Notably, the dialogue emphasized energy partnerships, where prominent Italian enterprises have been engaged in essential initiatives.

Special attention was given to Eni's integral role in Turkmenistan’s energy sector, successfully executing large-scale projects.

Transport and logistics emerged as critical facets of their partnership. Turkmenistan is enhancing international transport routes, such as North-South and East-West corridors, to improve regional and global connectivity.

Furthermore, the meeting stressed the importance of fostering cultural, educational, and scientific collaboration, with increasing interest in the Italian language and academic exchanges illustrating deeper people-to-people links between the nations.

The ambassador reiterated Italy’s view of Turkmenistan as a dependable and neutral ally and expressed his ongoing commitment to strengthening ties during his tenure.
