Messi Supports Neymar for Brazil's 2026 World Cup Team Despite Fitness Worries

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Lionel Messi has shown unwavering support for his former Barcelona teammate Neymar, emphasizing that the Brazilian striker deserves a place in Brazil’s lineup for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup despite concerns regarding his fitness.

Neymar, who holds the record as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 international goals, has not represented his national team since suffering a serious knee injury in October 2023. Following his return to club play with Santos, he has faced challenges in regaining match fitness and consistency.

Brazil’s coach Carlo Ancelotti indicated that Neymar will be considered for selection contingent on his ability to prove he is fit to play. Earlier in the year, Ancelotti remarked on the tight timeframe Neymar has to demonstrate his readiness for international matches.

In an appearance on the “Lo del Pollo” show, Messi stated that Neymar is still among the elite players globally. He asserted that for Brazil to field its strongest squad, Neymar must always be in contention, irrespective of his present form. Messi further remarked that it would be “wonderful” to have Neymar at the World Cup, highlighting his significance to both Brazil and the sport.

As the captain of Argentina during their 2022 World Cup victory, Messi recognized Brazil as one of the frontrunners for the 2026 tournament, alongside Spain and France, asserting that Brazil possesses the quality and talent to vie for top honors.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to take place across Canada, the United States, and Mexico, with the competition kicking off on June 11.
