Messi Faces Injury Setback in Inter Miami's Wild Win

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a dramatic match on Sunday night, Inter Miami's captain Lionel Messi encountered a potential left thigh injury as his team celebrated a 6-4 win against Philadelphia Union.

The incident unfolded in the 70th minute when Messi, appearing to feel discomfort after executing a free kick, was seen grasping the upper section of his left thigh, prompting him to request a substitution.

He was substituted in the 73rd minute, making way for Mateo Silvetti. Messi then exited the pitch independently before heading to the locker room, with no official information about the gravity of the injury available thus far.

The 38-year-old has had an exceptional season with Inter Miami CF, leading the MLS with a total of 20 contributions that include 12 goals and 8 assists over 14 matches.

Since his arrival at Inter Miami, Messi has tallied 107 contributions, comprising 62 goals and 45 assists in 67 club appearances.

This injury is particularly concerning as MLS is set to take a six-week hiatus for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which is slated from June 11 to July 19.

Messi is anticipated to play for the Argentina national football team at the tournament, though the final squad has not been declared yet.

Argentina will kick off their Group J journey against Algeria on June 16 in Kansas City. Prior to the competition, Argentina has friendly matches scheduled against Honduras on June 6 and Iceland on June 9.
