Mir Yar Baloch, a prominent Baloch nationalist and advocate for human rights, has condemned Pakistan for the recent destruction of approximately 40 mosques in the resource-rich region of Balochistan. His comments surfaced as Pakistan ramped up criticism against India for profiling mosques, imams, and religious committees in Jammu and Kashmir.
He highlighted the double standards of Pakistan, pointing out that while it accuses India of interference in religious matters concerning Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), its own security forces are guilty of demolishing and desecrating mosques in Balochistan. Baloch characterized these actions as indicative of Pakistan being a "terrorist state" that employs religious extremists to intimidate and oppress minority groups like Hindus, Sikhs, and Christians within its territory.
Baloch affirmed that the Republic of Balochistan stands with India regarding PoJK and denounced Pakistan for positioning itself as an advocate for minority rights while it systematically infringes upon those rights domestically. He noted that the Pakistani military has bombed mosques, burned sacred texts, and even kidnapped mosque leaders, all under an overarching strategy to stifle the Baloch population.
The first mosque attacked was the historic Khan of Kalat mosque, which endured substantial shelling during Pakistani military actions against civilian areas. The visible scars from mortar attacks remain a stark testimony to Pakistan's brutal governance and what Baloch labels as "un-Islamic acts."
Balochistan, rich in natural resources yet economically challenged and politically fragile, has seen a long-standing nationalist movement advocating for increased autonomy or complete independence. The insurgency's intensity has varied over the years but continues to confront Islamabad's authority. In May 2025, Baloch nationalist figures proclaimed independence, although the situation in the region remains precarious with recurrent strikes against Pakistani forces and infrastructure, particularly those associated with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
Baloch's pointed remarks shed light on the ongoing human rights violations and political unrest in Balochistan, raising critical concerns about Pakistan's actions and objectives in the area. The obliteration of mosques and other sacred spaces only serves to heighten tensions and challenges Pakistan’s narrative of upholding religious freedom.
