Mehidy Hasan Miraz, captain of the Bangladesh ODI team, has expressed strong support for Mosaddek Hossain's return to the national fold, citing his impressive performances in domestic cricket as key to his selection.
After a four-year hiatus, Mosaddek has been named in the 15-member squad for the first two ODIs against Australia. The 30-year-old cricketer has shone in domestic leagues, amassing 310 runs in six innings with a stellar average of 77.50 and a strike rate of 129.17, which includes one century and two half-centuries. Additionally, his bowling skills earned him 12 wickets in seven innings.
Ahead of the series, Miraz affirmed that Mosaddek's inclusion is well-earned.
"His long-standing performance in domestic cricket proves he deserves this opportunity. Now is the perfect moment for his reintegration into the team," Miraz remarked. He emphasized that if Mosaddek fulfills his role effectively, it will be a significant boost for the squad.
Complementary Roles in Team
Miraz downplayed any potential rivalry between himself and Mosaddek regarding playing positions, noting their history of collaboration on the field, including at the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
He clarified that their roles are distinctly different: Mosaddek as a batting all-rounder and himself as a bowling all-rounder. Miraz believes that Mosaddek's success would be beneficial not just for himself, but for the entire team.
Enhancing Team Balance with Bowling Options
Miraz pointed out the strategic advantage of Mosaddek’s off-spin, which offers the team additional resilience and depth in bowling during ODIs.
He mentioned that an extra bowling option is crucial in case one of the featured bowlers has an off day. Miraz has confidence in Mosaddek's bowling capabilities and his potential to execute precise deliveries.
Room for Growth in Rishad Hossain
Additionally, the Bangladesh captain discussed Rishad Hossain, the leg-spinner who has gained confidence from his successes both in domestic leagues and the Big Bash League.
However, Miraz suggested that Rishad must still adapt more fully to the ODI format. He explained that the skills required for T20 differ from those in ODIs. While expressing their trust in Rishad’s talent, Miraz remarked that he must continue honing his ability to manage both run rates and wicket-taking in various match contexts.
With consistent opportunities and further development, Rishad has the potential to become a vital bowler for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Focused Ahead of Series Against Australia
Bangladesh's ODI series against Australia will commence on Tuesday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
Australia will be without several key players, including fast bowlers Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, alongside regular captain Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head.
Despite these absentees, Miraz emphasized that Bangladesh will not underestimate their opponents, acknowledging Australia as a capable team. His focus remains on delivering high-quality cricket and securing victories.
Confident after recent accomplishments in domestic cricket, including wins against the West Indies, Pakistan, and New Zealand, Miraz feels the series offers a significant opportunity for Bangladesh, especially playing against Australia at home.
He expressed his intention to maximize home advantage and ensure strong performances throughout the series.
