Mirra Andreeva Triumphs at Adelaide International Ahead of Australian Open

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Adelaide, Australia: Eighteen-year-old Mirra Andreeva secured her fourth title on the WTA Tour with a decisive 6-3, 6-1 victory against fellow teen Victoria Mboko during the Adelaide International final on Saturday.

Andreeva, currently ranked eighth in the world, previously clinched consecutive WTA 1000 titles in Dubai and Indian Wells last year. She is set to face Olympic silver medallist Donna Vekic in the opening round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park.

Although Mboko, 19, began with a strong 3-0 lead in the first set, Andreeva rallied back to win six consecutive games and take the set. The second set was dominated by Andreeva, who broke early and clinched the match while serving.

During the award ceremony, Andreeva humorously attributed her success to her perseverance, mental fortitude, and the support of her coach, Conchita Martinez, a former world number two.

Despite taking a medical timeout during the match, Canadian Mboko, ranked 17th in the world, made history last year as the youngest player since Serena Williams to defeat four major champions en route to her Canadian Open victory. She will compete against Australian Emerson Jones in her first match in Melbourne.

In the men's final in Adelaide, Czech player Tomas Machac triumphed over Ugo Humbert from France with a score of 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-2.

Meanwhile, in Auckland, Jakub Mensik came out on top against Sebastian Baez, winning 6-3, 7-6(7) to obtain his second ATP title, having previously won in Miami last year after defeating mentor Novak Djokovic. Mensik is set to face Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta at the Australian Open, while Baez will meet Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

In Hobart, Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto captured her first WTA title since 2023, taking down American Iva Jovic 6-4, 6-4 in another lead-up event for the Australian Open.
