A collective of Buddhist monks hailing from Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Laos has successfully wrapped up an inspiring pilgrimage journey across Indonesia as they drew closer to the renowned Borobudur Temple in Central Java in anticipation of the Waisak celebrations. The pilgrimage, referred to as Thudong, embodies a significant message of peace, harmony, and spiritual contemplation.
Comprising 58 monks, the pilgrimage launched on May 9 from the Brahmavihara-Arama Buddhist Temple located in Buleleng, Bali. Over a span of twenty days, these monks traversed approximately 666 kilometers, solely on foot, journeying through a multitude of towns and communities across Bali, East Java, and Central Java, ultimately reaching Magelang.
This year's journey was themed “Walk for Peace,” which emphasized the values of compassion, tolerance, and unity amidst a complex world. Local residents greeted the monks enthusiastically along the pathway, providing assistance, nourishment, and encouragement as they pursued their spiritual endeavors.
The monks journeyed through various locations including Banyuwangi, Pasuruan, Sidoarjo, Surabaya, Gresik, Mojokerto, Jepara, Demak, Semarang, Surakarta, and Klaten, before finally arriving at Borobudur Temple. Support from police, volunteers, and local communities was paramount in ensuring the journey's safety and smooth conduct.
The monks' arrival at Borobudur carries great significance, coinciding with global Buddhist preparations for Waisak, a momentous occasion that marks the birth, enlightenment, and death of Siddhartha Gautama, better known as Buddha.
As the largest Buddhist temple worldwide, Borobudur stands as the spiritual heart of Waisak festivities in Indonesia. Annually, thousands of devotees, monks, and visitors converge at the ancient site to engage in prayers, meditation, and religious observances.
Religious leaders noted that the Thudong pilgrimage serves both as a spiritual practice and a symbol of peace and mutual understanding among nations. The inclusion of monks from various countries underscores the universal principles of Buddhism and the importance of nurturing friendships across borders.
With their pilgrimage concluded, the monks' profound message of peace resonated with the communities they visited along the way. This journey reaffirmed the powerful role of faith, compassion, and cultural unity in bridging divides and inspiring a shared hope for a more peaceful world.
