António Morgado from UAE Team Emirates-XRG secured a remarkable triumph at the Trofeo Calvià on Wednesday, marking the start of the Challenge Mallorca. Facing challenging rain-soaked conditions, Morgado successfully bridged the gap to the leading pack and ultimately out-sprinted Spain’s Héctor Álvarez in Palmanova.
The race was marked by steep climbs that gradually thinned out the peloton. Adrien Boichis (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Ådne Holter (Uno-X Mobility), and Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost) surged ahead, creating a lead exceeding 90 seconds before the second-to-last climb.
With 33km to go, Morgado executed a critical attack in the pouring rain. Only Álvarez was able to match his pace, joining him in pursuit of the leading trio. As they approached the Coll de sa Gramola, the five riders formed the front group.
On the final ascent, Coll de Soma, Álvarez made the first move, but Morgado quickly followed, leaving the two to contest the finish alone. Despite their efforts to separate, they were evenly matched, resulting in an exhilarating sprint finish that Morgado won.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG also saw two additional riders in the top 10, with Nils Politt placing eighth and Rune Herregodts finishing ninth, showcasing a solid beginning to their season.
