Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

In a nail-biting semi-final at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Morocco triumphed over Nigeria, earning their final berth. The match on Wednesday in Rabat concluded in a 0–0 draw after 120 gripping minutes, leading to a tense penalty shootout. Morocco emerged victorious by a score of 4–2.

Despite both teams showcasing solid performances, relentless defending and standout goalkeeping ensured a scoreless regular time. Morocco dominated possession and increased their attacking efforts, while Nigeria sought to capitalize on counter opportunities but failed to find the net.

During the penalty shootout, Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou shone brightly, saving two crucial penalties from Nigeria, significantly tipping the scales in favor of Morocco. Successful penalties from Achraf Hakimi, Neil El Aynaoui, and Eliesse Ben Seghir ensured their lead, while Youssef En-Nesyri sealed the win with the final kick, igniting celebration among home fans.

This remarkable victory secured Morocco’s first AFCON final appearance since 2004 and marked a significant moment for the nation, with their previous title win dating back to 1976. The enthusiastic support from local fans further heightened the stakes and excitement ahead of the final.

Although Nigeria put forth a valiant effort, they were unable to penetrate Morocco’s resilient defense. The team will now compete for third place against Egypt, who were defeated by Senegal in the other semi-final.

The final match will see Morocco clash with Senegal, who claimed a 1–0 victory over Egypt in their semi-final match. The upcoming final on Sunday is set to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams vying for the prestigious AFCON trophy. Senegal is the defending champion, while Morocco aims for their first title.

This important win underscores the determination, skill, and composure of the Moroccan squad, with fans celebrating a hard-fought achievement that means so much to their nation. Demonstrating respect and tenacity, both teams have laid the groundwork for an exhilarating finish to the tournament.
