In a significant move, Moscow has rolled out a set of 22 national standards designed to govern the application of artificial intelligence within the healthcare sector. These standards aim to enhance patient care, simplify clinical processes, and maintain ethical practices. They specifically address areas such as neural networks for healthcare management, predictive analytics, remote patient monitoring, and Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS).
Anastasia Rakova, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Social Development, highlighted the city’s significant experience with AI in healthcare: “We have gained extensive knowledge in using AI to support doctors’ daily tasks and to enhance diagnostic precision and treatment quality. This work lays the groundwork for national standards aimed at promoting the swift adoption of AI across Russia and establishing a strong ecosystem with definitive quality metrics.”
The MosMedAI platform, which employs AI for medical imaging analysis, has successfully expanded to 74 regions, including the addition of two more, enabling healthcare providers to efficiently process an unlimited number of X-ray studies. Currently, over 2,000 healthcare facilities benefit from this platform, receiving AI-enhanced diagnostics, ongoing technical assistance, and monthly quality oversight managed by the Diagnostics and Telemedicine Center of the Moscow Department of Healthcare.
As of 2024, nine of the 22 standards (including two preliminary standards) have been introduced, providing guidelines to ensure the safe and ethical implementation of AI in medical practices. An additional five standards are set to launch in January 2026, offering a cohesive framework for the integration of AI in medical decision-making, remote patient monitoring, predictive analytics, and general healthcare management while addressing ethical concerns.
Since its launch, MosMedAI has facilitated the analysis of more than eight million examinations, showcasing the scalability and efficacy of Moscow’s AI-driven healthcare initiatives. With the establishment of these standards, Russia is set to foster a cohesive and trustworthy ecosystem for AI in healthcare, ensuring innovation, quality, and safety in medical services.
