Tensions Rise Over Munambam Land Dispute

Post by : Shakul

In Munambam village, Kerala, the longstanding land dispute has escalated into a significant political and social issue following the Kerala State Waqf Board's registration of the contentious land on the UMEED portal. This action has intensified tensions among the state government, the Catholic Church, local inhabitants, and the Waqf Board, coinciding with the newly formed UDF government’s tenure.

The UMEED portal, initiated by the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs, serves as a centralized digital framework for monitoring and registering Waqf properties throughout India. Its use for the Munambam land has reignited fears among numerous families in the area regarding their land ownership and property rights.

Residents of Munambam, situated in Ernakulam district, have been vocal in their protests for months, advocating for transparent revenue rights over their holdings. Many families assert they have legally acquired the land years ago and have deep-rooted ties to the area. The recent development has only amplified their anxiety and uncertainty.

In an editorial in Deepika, a newspaper aligned with the Catholic Church, leaders voiced strong opposition to the registration process, emphasizing that the dispute extends beyond the 610 families affected in Munambam. They argued it represents a broader issue related to secular values and social harmony in Kerala. There are concerns that a mishandling of the situation could result in wider discontent.

Reactions from the political sphere have similarly intensified across Kerala. Opposing factions have accused the government of inadequate management of this delicate issue, while various community organizations are calling for immediate measures to alleviate residents' fears regarding legal and property uncertainties. As the situation unfolds, it is likely to become a key point of discussion in the near future.

Defending its actions, the Waqf Board stated the registration was conducted in accordance with legal processes and administrative standards. Officials clarified that registering on the UMEED portal does not invalidate the current residents' rights and that the situation is subject to legal scrutiny and governmental decisions.

The Munambam land controversy has evolved into one of Kerala’s most critical disputes entangling issues of religion, property rights, and political dynamics. With mounting pressure from residents, Church representatives, and political factions, the emerging Kerala government may soon face a substantial challenge in juggling legal protocols with public anxiety and social order.
