On Sunday, Nandani Sharma of Delhi Capitals made history by becoming the first Indian fast bowler to execute a hat-trick in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). The 24-year-old showcased her skills in a match against Gujarat Giants in Navi Mumbai, delivering an incredible performance despite her team's close defeat.
Nandani concluded her spell with remarkable figures of 5 wickets for 33 runs, marking her as one of the standout bowlers this season. She now joins the ranks of WPL stars who have achieved hat-tricks, including Issy Wong, Grace Harris, and Deepti Sharma.
The hat-trick moment struck in the 20th over of Gujarat’s innings when Nandani took out Kanika Ahuja, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, and Renuka Singh in rapid succession, igniting celebrations in the Delhi Capitals camp.
About Nandani Sharma
Born in 2001, Nandani hails from Chandigarh and has built a commendable reputation as a pace bowler in India’s domestic circuit. She has played for Chandigarh in various domestic tournaments and has impressed selectors with her consistent performances in inter-zonal matches for the North Zone Women.
Her talents were rewarded when Delhi Capitals acquired her for Rs 20 lakh during the WPL 2026 auction, a strategic move that now appears astute.
Nandani's Remarks Post-Match
After the match, Nandani expressed gratitude towards captain Jemimah Rodrigues and opener Shafali Verma for their unwavering support during tense moments.
“My main focus was on my targets. Shafali and Jemimah were motivating me before every delivery, with a straightforward plan to attack the stumps. I didn’t anticipate a hat-trick, but the team assured me that wickets would follow,” she remarked.
She also shared insights on a vital adjustment made in the middle of her spell.
“After my opening over, I sensed that the batters were reading my deliveries too well, so I opted to use my variations. Thankfully, it paid off. My brother, mother, and a close friend are here supporting me, while the rest of my family is watching from home. Their backing means everything to me.”
Delight Amid Defeat for Delhi Capitals
In spite of Nandani's stellar performance, Delhi Capitals were unable to clinch the victory. Gujarat Giants narrowly won by four runs, propelled by an impressive 95 from Sophie Devine and a composed final over under pressure.
This victory marked the Gujarat Giants' second consecutive win, whereas the Delhi Capitals faced their second defeat of the season. Nonetheless, the spotlight shone brightly on Nandani Sharma, firmly establishing her presence in women's cricket.
