NASA Kicks Off Development of Permanent Moon Base with New Lunar Missions

Post by : Bianca Haleem

NASA, the United States space agency, has officially commenced the initial stage of its plan to construct a permanent lunar base. This announcement follows the recent success of the Artemis 2 lunar flyby mission.

Contracts totaling hundreds of millions of dollars have been awarded to four American aerospace companies to aid in developing this future lunar outpost. The objective is to establish the Moon for extended human missions and scientific exploration.

In this initial phase, Blue Origin is set to deliver two cargo landers that will transport vital equipment and lunar vehicles to the Moon's surface. These missions are focused on regions close to the Moon's south pole, a key location for exploration.

Astrolab and Lunar Outpost will create lunar terrain vehicles intended to assist astronauts in traversing the lunar landscape and conducting research missions.

Additionally, Firefly Aerospace, which achieved a successful Moon landing last year, will deploy the first drones to the lunar surface. These drones will play a crucial role in navigating challenging terrain and supporting future construction efforts.

NASA intends to send this equipment before the first Artemis astronauts set foot on the Moon, with the inaugural human landing mission targeted for 2028.

According to NASA's extensive plans, the second phase of the Moon base initiative is slated to commence in 2029 and extend into the early 2030s. This phase will focus on creating permanent infrastructure, such as a lunar power grid and essential systems.

During the final phase in the 2030s, the lunar base is projected to become fully operational. NASA aims to establish specialized habitats for astronauts to live on the Moon for prolonged periods, signifying a significant leap toward a sustained human presence beyond Earth.
