UAE's Naseej Initiative to Promote Sustainable Textile Practices

In a significant move under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE has initiated Naseej, a national effort focused on reimagining the textile industry through principles of circular economy.

This initiative aspires to shift the textile sector from a linear model of consumption towards a more sustainable framework centered on resource conservation, enhanced recycling, and long-lasting economic benefits. Naseej aligns seamlessly with the UAE’s overarching sustainability initiatives and developmental strategies.

The program has been forged through a collaborative effort among the National Projects Office, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, Emirates Foundation, and Tadweer Group. Naseej will establish a cohesive national platform for government entities, industry representatives, researchers, and community stakeholders to foster sustainable practices throughout the textile value chain.

Inspired by the UAE’s rich traditions of craftsmanship and resource preservation, Naseej seeks to enhance these ideals while fostering contemporary circular economy methodologies in daily life.

Her Highness Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairperson of the Presidential Court for National Projects, highlighted that this initiative showcases the UAE's unwavering commitment to sustainability and prudent resource management. She emphasized its role in advocating for positive behavioral shifts, boosting community involvement, and laying the groundwork for future generations' development.

His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs and Chairman of the Emirates Foundation, remarked that Naseej marks a significant advancement in embedding circular economy concepts into the UAE’s sustainable development model. He stressed the initiative's potential to unite institutions and communities in re-evaluating how resources are preserved and utilized.

The launch tackles the rising issue of textile waste, both globally and within the UAE, where annual waste is projected at around 220,000 tonnes. Naseej aims to counter this problem by enhancing collection and recycling infrastructures, supporting research and innovation, and encouraging mindful consumption habits.

UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism, Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, affirmed that the initiative aligns with the nation’s ambition to build a comprehensive circular economy, adhering to global best practices. He articulated that Naseej will forge a national framework linking policy, industry advancement, and public participation, furthering the UAE Circular Economy Policy 2031 objectives.

Naseej is anchored by five strategic pillars:

• Collection and Recycling
• Awareness and Outreach
• Behavioural Research
• Policies and Regulations
• Circular Business and Innovation

These pillars are designed to enhance the textile industry, boost resource efficiency, and generate measurable environmental and economic advantages.

The foundation for Naseej was laid during COP28 with strong backing from the National Projects Office. Multiple Memorandums of Understanding have since been signed with key players in the textile ecosystem, including fashion brands, manufacturers, recycling firms, research entities, and community groups.

To mark its public launch, Naseej will host its inaugural community event, “The Fabric of Possibility,” scheduled for June 5-7, 2026, at Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi. The engaging event will educate visitors about textile waste, unveil sustainable solutions, and offer activities that aspire to promote a circular economy. Further events are anticipated to occur across other UAE regions in subsequent phases.

Following the launch, Naseej intends to roll out various national programs targeting sustainable textile methods, enhancing collection and recycling frameworks, fostering research initiatives, and creating marketable solutions for wider adoption across the nation.

By harmonizing policy, industry engagement, and community involvement within a unified framework, Naseej strengthens the UAE’s role as a global leader in the circular economy while demonstrating a practical way to harmonize economic growth with environmental stewardship.
