The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated a preliminary inquiry into around 1.2 million Tesla vehicles after receiving reports regarding suspension failures that may result in steering control loss.
This investigation centers on certain Tesla Model 3 (2018–2020) and Model Y (2021–2023) vehicles following multiple consumer complaints.
The NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation noted that it has received 156 complaints claiming that the front lower lateral suspension link became detached while the vehicles were operational.
Such detachment may render the vehicle inoperable, necessitating towing services.
Vehicle owners reported that these issues occurred unexpectedly; however, some did notice strange noises prior to the suspension failure.
At this point, the regulator has not recorded any accidents, injuries, or fatalities associated with this defect.
Authorities will explore the cause, scope, and severity of the concerns to decide if additional regulatory actions, such as a recall, may be warranted.
Tesla has issued recalls for similar suspension-related issues in the past.
In 2021, about 2,800 Model 3 vehicles were recalled due to a production error, followed by a subsequent recall in 2023 that affected 422 Model 3 cars with similar defects.
However, the NHTSA indicated that the newly reported issues seem to exceed those earlier recalls and could have a different underlying cause.
This review represents the opening phase of the NHTSA’s defect investigation protocol.
If it is determined that a safety-related defect exists, this inquiry may ultimately lead to broader recalls or other corrective actions.
Tesla has yet to issue an immediate response to the investigation announcement.
Tesla remains under close observation from U.S. safety regulators, as investigations into vehicle reliability and component performance are ongoing.
This latest investigation emphasizes ongoing efforts to uphold vehicle safety standards amidst the growing adoption of electric vehicles around the globe.
