Agricultural Advancements Enhance Food Security in North Al Sharqiyah

Post by : Shakul

In the year 2025, North Al Sharqiyah Governorate experienced remarkable growth within its agricultural, livestock, and water sectors, exemplifying Oman’s ongoing commitment to bolstering food security and promoting sustainable practices. Various initiatives undertaken with the guidance of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources propelled these developments.

These initiatives align with Oman Vision 2040, which emphasizes the enhancement of food production, better management of water resources, and support for both farmers and livestock handlers across the region. The strategic focus is on building a robust and self-sufficient agricultural landscape.

Dr. Abdulaziz Ali Al Mashikhi noted that the average agricultural output in the governorate reached 1.267 million tonnes over the last three years, indicating a steady increase in productivity across diverse farming sectors.

Fruit farming, in particular, saw a 7% rise, culminating in 841 acres and a total production of 4,633 tonnes. Vegetable cultivation also played a vital role, occupying 989 acres and yielding over 51,000 tonnes, which makes up a significant part of the region's agricultural activities.

The area dedicated to date palm cultivation grew by 1.3%, reaching 8,359 acres, with an estimated production of 50,236 tonnes. This places the governorate fifth nationally in date output, with a leading position in the production of “Mabsali” dates, underscoring its agricultural significance.

Alongside these crop achievements, the authorities initiated the Model Grape Farms Project in Ibra, aiming to develop 100 acres of grape cultivation, introduce internationally competitive varieties, and enhance both economic yield and food and water security.

Officials reported that North Al Sharqiyah has attained complete self-sufficiency in vital products such as dates, cucumbers, honey, and eggs. These accomplishments reflect the region's growing role in Oman’s national economy and its dedication to adopting modern and sustainable agricultural methodologies.
